A tripartite partnership between Pfizer and Cepheid and the Egyptian Society of Antimicrobials and Sepsis
occasion of World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (AMR), Pfizer biopharmaceuticals Egypt signed a tripartite partnership agreement with the Egyptian Society of Antimicrobials and Infection, and Cepheid Molecular Diagnostics to raise community awareness about the danger of antimicrobial resistance and its optimal use, build the capacities of healthcare professionals in the field of infectious diseases, and transfer global expertise to reduce antimicrobial resistance.
According to the World Health Organization, antimicrobial resistance is one of the biggest global health threats facing humanity. Unless health institutions worldwide work together to address this disaster, these threats will only worsen.
Dr. Ahmed Mokhtar, Professor of Anesthesia and Critical Care and President of the Egyptian Society of Antimicrobials and Infection, said: “This cooperation will enhance the expertise and competence of doctors and supporting staff in the field of antimicrobial resistance, which is today one of the biggest risks threatening the functioning of healthcare systems and hospitals around the world. This tripartite partnership is expected to provide opportunities to organize many events at the level of medical teams and all segments of the society to raise awareness about the optimal use of antibiotics and ways to reduce antimicrobial resistance.”
Eng. Hussein Barazi, Vice President of Cepheid for the Middle East, Africa, Turkey, and CIS said: “At Cepheid, we aim to provide a better way to improve patient outcomes by enabling access to molecular diagnostic tests such as our family of Xpert®️ tests, which provide speed, accuracy, and ease of use, as one of the solutions for bacterial resistance to antibiotics. This triple partnership will shed more light on the issue of antibiotic resistance and ways to reduce it, especially in intensive care units in hospitals. We will also work to provide the latest scientific and technical expertise to support medical teams and raise awareness about this pressing health issue.”
Due to the health and economic importance of the consequences of antimicrobial resistance, Pfizer Egypt organized a social media campaign called ##اتغير_تعيشها_بصحة (#Change_to_Live_Healthy) to raise the awareness of the public and healthcare professionals about AMR and the importance of the cooperation between local and global health authorities, which will contribute to changing people’s habits before microbes change theirs and affect the efficiency of hospitals and intensive care units.
Dr. Ahmed El-Shazly, Pfizer Cluster Lead for Egypt, Levant and Iraq said: “Reducing the spread of antimicrobial resistance requires an approach that relies on the cooperation of the public and private sectors especially in the field of research and development to find urgent solution to this global issue. As an industry leader in AMR, we are committed to combating antimicrobial resistance and cooperating with the different healthcare entities to raise awareness about AMR, reduce its spread in hospitals and the threat it poses on citizens.”
It is worth mentioning that Pfizer pays great attention to the issue of antimicrobial resistance and strives to achieve the greatest possible progress in overcoming the unique scientific and public health challenges, and environmental problems caused by antibiotic resistance. For over 170 years, Pfizer has been and continues to be a leading company in the research and development of advanced antimicrobials and vaccines. We are constantly looking for innovative solutions to address the threat of antimicrobial resistance to global health.
